aftermath

These thick trunks
shudder with dents
and deep gashes
the rings ache

After a battering of wind
the branches droop
now they hang languid
in the still air

The leaves are two
three colors
blending with the ground
spilled around the knotted roots
this is what the seasons leave behind

Yet
it only hurts when I breathe
